Who we are

Tom York

Consultant

Tom is one of our Harper Adams University placement students with us until summer 2024.

Tom is currently studying for a BSc (Hons) degree in Agri-Business. Although Tom’s mother moved away from the family farm before he was born, his passion for agriculture started from an early age where he would spend as much time as possible revisiting the family farm and getting as involved as he could. Throughout school Tom was unsure of where he wanted to take his career, however when the idea of a career in Agriculture came to mind, he knew that is what he wanted to do. When the idea of becoming a consultant came to mind after speaking to his father, who is a consultant in the IT sector, he realised this is where he wanted his career to go.

Tom has had a variety of jobs on a variety of farms. Being from Cheshire, he spent his first year at college working on a dairy farm. This gave him valuable insight into the dairy sector, however with the family farm being predominantly arable, he knew this was where he wanted to gain the most experience. Whilst at college, he was required to undertake a year-long industry placement, like the one at Harper. For this, he went down to Cambridgeshire to work full time on a mixed beef and arable farm. The farm had also utilized diversification to create another income stream, which also opened his eyes to the various options that farmers have to increase profits.

Tom feels very lucky to be a successful candidate for the Wilson Wraight scholarship, which is something he had hoped to achieve right from the very start of his time at Harper Adams University. The chance to spend a year in industry is a great opportunity to learn, enhance, and strengthen the theoretical knowledge you learn at university to apply to real life scenarios. He hopes during his time at Wilson Wraight he can do just that under the guidance of experienced industry professionals.
