New National Design Guidance Sets Higher Standards for Future Development

The government has published updated national design guidance aimed at improving the quality of new build development across England, forming part of the wider planning reforms currently underway.

The guidance sets out much clearer expectations for how new neighbourhoods should be designed. Alongside supporting the delivery of new homes, the changes seek to ensure design quality remains central to the planning process between all sectors.

At the core of the guidance are seven principles of well-designed places as shown in the attached image.

While currently out for consultation, the guidance signals a clear direction for future planning decisions, reinforcing the importance of strong design and early masterplanning in achieving successful outcomes. It is intended to provide a clear rulebook to build better designed, safer and healthier neighbourhoods that complement local areas. The guidance also sets out how new homes should reflect modern life, from space to work from home, to flexible layouts that adapt as families grow and cater for every stage of life.

For developers, landowners and local authorities alike, the message is clear that high-quality and future proofed design is an essential part of delivering the next generation of neighbourhoods. We are hopeful that this guidance will make these aspirations easier to apply in practice and deliverable in reality.
